Being the champion of the Kite Running Tournament was Amir's way of gaining affection from his father. While Hassan was retrieving the winning kite he was harrased and beatup because of his race. Behind the corner Amir watched. A friend was betrayed, and a friendship was over.
As young kids Amir and Hassan would race up the hill and climb into the pomegranate tree. There they would read stories and laugh for hours and hours.
Brown Leather Notebook
The notebook was given as a gift to Amir on his 15th birthday from Rahim Khan (Baba's best friend). Amir writes and writes in it. Later in life, he persues his dream and publishes four novels.
The Tan Van
It was what Amir and Baba would jump into every Saturday morning and go bargin hunting in. They would find the best deals and then go to the market to try and make a profit off the junk. The van was where Baba and Amir had some of their best conversations. It brought their relationship closer than ever.
Silver Watch
On his way to Kabul, Amir and Farid stopped at Farid's brothers house. While eating soup Amir noticed the skinny children staring at his watch while he ate. As a gift of his kindness he gave the watch to the kids. The children were content with it for a few minutes and then left it in the dirt. Amir later realized it wasn't the watch the kids were starring at, but the food he was eating.
"Baba saying the only sin that mattered was theft. When you tell a lie, you steal a man's right to the truth." I believe that this quote is saying that telling a lie will not only hurt yourself, but others around you as well. Telling a lie is unjust to other person and is usually harmful. This quote that Baba makes is quite ironic because Baba lies to Amir when he doesn't tell him that Hassan is actually his half brother. Amir goes on to tell a lie about Hassan stealing money to get Ali and Hassan to move out of their living quarters. I think Amir learns from Baba in the perspective that he goes to rescue Hassan's son from the Taliban. I believe that deep down Amir knows that he is also rescueing a small part of Hassan himself.
Quote #2
"There is a way to be good again." This quote is saying that when you make a mistake there is always a way to fix it. Wheather the mistake is big or small and the fix is just an attempt or a solution. In the novel, I think Amir learns from this quote in the sense that he knows that he fractured the friendship between him and Hassan. To fix the problem he adopts Hassan's son Soharb and fathers him because Hassan no longer could. It doesn't matter how evil a person can be, there is always some good inside of them.
Quote #3
"One summer day, I used one of Ali's kitchen knives to carve our names on it: 'Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul.' Those words made it formal: the tree was ours. " Later Hassan mentions in his letter "the tree hasn't bore fruit in years." I believe that the tree was a symbol of Amir and Hassan's friendship. They wanted it known that they had a true friendship so they wrote it for the world to see. The tree was theirs and the friendship was theirs. When their friendship died, the tree's fruit bearings did as well. This quote is saying that just like a tree can stop bearing fruit, a friendship can stop too.
